Rights Reps Project

The Rights Reps Project seeks to raise awareness among people seeking asylum of their legal rights, empower them to spot potential human rights violations, and deepen their understanding of the UK asylum system.  Each week, we offer a diverse programme of workshops, covering topics such as how the asylum system works, preparing for substantive interviews, sessions on human rights and the UK political system, and talks from guest speakers.  We also organise social activities designed to bring the community together and support integration across the North East.   Recent events have included drama workshops, guided tours, beach walks, visits to local museums and art galleries, and cultural outings such as concerts at the Music Hall, drama plays, and ballet performances at His Majesty’s Theatre.

Our work is founded on the principles of co-production and co-design. We collaborate at every stage through a democratic and inclusive process. For GREC, it is important that the project truly reflects what the community wants to do, offering people seeking asylum a space to exercise their agency without feeling constrained.

GREC is also currently the only organisation in the Grampian region offering free in-person legal support (though not legal advice) to people seeking asylum.
