GREC’s Response to the Scottish Parliament’s Legal Aid Inquiry Published

GREC is pleased to share that our response to the Scottish Parliament’s Inquiry into Legal Aid has been officially published.

In our submission, we highlight the significant challenges faced by individuals from ethnic minority communities in accessing legal support. Drawing on our frontline experience, we stress that while the legal aid system is a vital lifeline for many, it too often falls short in practice—particularly for those facing language barriers, systemic discrimination, or a lack of awareness about their rights.

We also emphasise the importance of improving cultural competency within legal services and ensuring that interpreters and translated materials are readily available and appropriately used. Our response urges the Scottish Government to take a more proactive approach to addressing these inequalities, including funding outreach and education to build trust and understanding within marginalised communities.

We believe that a fair, accessible, and inclusive legal aid system is essential for upholding justice and human rights for all in Scotland.
